The Achievements and Awards of Mary Louise Parker

Filed under: Achievements and Awards - 14 Jun 2012  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Mary Louise Parker is a wonderful actress. The first time I saw her was in the HBO mini-series Angels In America. She performed wonderfully and she even won an Emmy for her performance. She is not America’s sweetheart. She is not Julia Roberts or Drew Barrymore. She is not bubbly and effusive and adorable. On the contrary, she is rough around the edges and a little surly, the kind of woman who could probably handle herself in a bar fight. And she is not just like that in real life. On her Showtime series Weeds, currently in its sixth season, she plays a widow named Nancy Botwin in who sells marijuana to support her family and is involved in a messy relationship with a Mexican drug dealer who shares her enthusiasm for rough sex. It is a role she reportedly took over a plum gig on Desperate Housewives, choosing Weeds, because in her words, it was uglier and more challenging.

Parker has been described by some writers as the long suffering girl next door, best known for her appearances in Fried Green Tomatoes in 1991, Bullets Over Broadway in 1994 and Boys on the Side in 1995. She is also known for her stage work and she has won major theatre awards for her performances in Prelude to a Kiss in 1990, How I Learned to Drive in 1996 and Proof in 2000. Mary Louise’s sex appeal stems from her intelligence and feminine poise. She is quite sexy for a woman hovering around the 40 mark, and many people wonder if the fact that she is part Swedish means that she is less inhibited than the stereotypical American middle-aged woman.

She was cites as one of 12 Promising New Actors of 1990 in John Willis’ Screen World, and won the Clarence Derwent Award and Theatre World for her stage work in Prelude to a Kiss that same year. She also picked up her first Tony nominations for the role. Parker has since earned several major acting nominations and a handful of awards. Also, in 2004, Parker’s body of work was honoured by the Phialdelphia Film festival, where she was presented with a prize for Artistic Achievement. Few living actors can claim to have been the inspiration for a song, but you count Mary Louise Parker among the tiny group that do.

The Career Evolution of Mary Louise Parker

Mary Louise Parker is best remembered for her great performance in the TV mini-series of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, for which she received a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Angels in America is perhaps one of the most mind-blowing mini-series I have ever seen. Aside from Mary Louise Parker, the TV mini series has a wonderful cast. Al Pacino, who knows he is going to die despite the secret stash of AZT in his private hospital fridge, finally flips his histrionic lid. Mary Louise plays Harper, who is strung out on Valium, causing her to constantly hallucinate, sometimes jointly with another character, Prior. She longs to escape from her sexless marriage. As the film continues, all the lost souls come together to create bounds of love, loss and loneliness and, in the end, discover forgiveness and overcome abandonment.

The movie is mind blowing and Mary Louise Parker does a great job and it is no wonder that she won acclaim for the role. In 2004, Parker appeared in the comedy Saved! and a television film called Miracle Run, based on the true story of a mother of two sons with autism, as well as appearing in Craig Lucas’ Reckless on Broadway. This just goes to show that she is a very talented actress who can take on any kind of role. In November 2005, Parker was honored with an exhibition of her career at Boston University, where memorabilia from her career were donated to the University’s Library. In 2006, Parker received the 2006 Golden Globe Award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for her lead role in Weeds. In that category, she defeated the four leads of Desperate Housewives. She dedicated the award to the late John Spencer, known for his work as Leo MgGarry on the West Wing. After receiving the award, Parker stated that marijuana should be legalized.

Parker portrayed Sarah opposite Bruce Willis in the film RED, an adaptation of the comic book mini-series of the same name. The film was released on October 15 2010. In the film version, the title is derived from the designation of the status of agent Frank Moses, played by Bruce Willis, meaning Retired Extremely, Dangerous. The movie was a hit and reinforced Mary Louise Parker. In 2011, Parker became the host for the tenth season of the PBS documentary series Independent Lens.
